Lighted vigil in the shape of a ribbon

See how we lit up the Lakefront!

We’re so grateful to everyone who showed up to Light Up The Lakefront last week! Thanks to CAN TV, you can now watch a video of the event. Listen to a survivor and former Between Friends client, as well as members of our staff and board, explain why our work around domestic violence is so essential.

For more than 20 years, Between Friends has marked the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Lake Michigan’s shore, this year on North Avenue Beach. We light thousands of candles in a striking visual tribute to the nearly 12 million adults and over 19 million children affected by domestic violence each year. Each candle symbolically represents an individual whose life has been affected by domestic violence. Yet so many are impacted every year that each candle stands for over a thousand people.

Attendees this year listened to domestic violence survivors share their stories, which highlighted not only the terrible reality of experiencing abuse, but also the hope for healing and change.

Thank you so much to the survivors who spoke at the event, to Ifeanyi Elswith for providing music at the event, to our staff, volunteers, and everyone who came out, and to Aaron Cynic for taking the photos — you can see more pics at our Facebook page!
