Between Friends Board of Director President Daniel R. Hernandez, Esq has been named a 2022 “Notable Nonprofit Board Leaders” by Crain’s Chicago Business for being a leader who “help their chosen organizations deal with the aftereffects of the pandemic, create new fundraisers and breathe new life into existing ones, and mentor other board members.”.
Daniel joined the Between Friends board in June 2018 and served as Vice President from 2019 to 2020; President-Elect from 2020 to 2021, and as President since July 2021. As President, Daniel led the organization through implementing a new strategic plan to guide our growth through 2024 that resulted in Between Friends securing over $350,000 in new funding during our most recent fiscal year to expand our programming. With that expansion of funding, we were able to reach over 7,100 individuals through our crisis intervention, prevention, and education work last fiscal year – a 40% increase from the previous year. In June, Daniel and the rest of the Between Friends board approved a budget with revenue of $2.3 million, a 55% increase from the prior fiscal year.
Daniel is the CEO and principal attorney with NextLevel Law, where as an advocate and legal counsel, he works with families experiencing divorce, child custody and support, domestic violence, and DCFS proceedings. He has a passion for assisting the LGBT and Latino communities by volunteering his time at different nonprofit and membership associations. He has written multiple publications and continuously follows issues affecting LGBT Latinos, and his passion, determination, and hard work has been recognized by his peers and the overall community through accolades including the 2016 Favorite Adjunct Professor Award from UIC John Marshall Law School Student Bar Association.
